UTP Cat6 twisted-pair cables have significantly improved parameters, and the bandwidth has been extended to 250MHz or more. The term Unshielded implies that there will be no additional protective shielding. These cables are cables having 2 to 1800 unshielded twisted pairs. These twisted pairs with a centre cross and an outer jacket for protection, but no metallic shield is there. Therefore, these patch cables are often inexpensive and lightweight.

These cables also help cancel EMI(electromagnetic interference) and RFI(radio frequency interference). But the EMI cancellation takes place due to the unique pairing found in the line. If we compare these cables with shielded ones, we will notice that unshielded patch cables offer much less protection.

The difference from Cat5 or Cat5e twisted-pair cables is in shape and structure. It adds the cross frame of insulation, but also places the four pairs of twisted pair in the four grooves of the cross frame to keep the best performance and decrease cross-talk. So it supports frequencies up to 2.5 times that of Cat5e cables and can deliver up to 10,000 Mbps, or 10 gigabits per second.

The cables all meet the requirements of the TIA/EIA-568 standard. Cat6 cables offer an improved signal to noise ratio (SNR) and a better, cleaner signal with fewer errors. Cat6A goes one step beyond that for an even cleaner signal.
